Information
Otautahi Māori Wardens
The Otautahi Māori Wardens have proudly served their community since the 1950s–1960s, upholding a long-standing commitment to manaaki, safety, and wellbeing. As part of Ngā Wātene Māori, Wardens operate under the Māori Community Development Act 1962, which guides their role in supporting, protecting, and strengthening our communities.
Over time, the role of a Māori Warden has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of whānau and the wider community. Wardens undertake comprehensive training across areas including security, de-escalation, self-defence, communication, first aid, and fire safety. This ensures they are well equipped to respond confidently, calmly, and appropriately in a wide range of situations.
The Otautahi Māori Wardens hold regular monthly meetings, alongside an Annual General Meeting each year, to maintain strong governance, accountability, and connection within the rōpū.
Otautahi Maori Wardens mahi extends across a wide geographical area, providing support wherever they are called. This includes Murihiku, Ōtepoti, Akaroa, Kaikōura, and Whakatū, and at times across the North Island. Their willingness to travel reflects their deep commitment to awhi and serve others.
This dedication is grounded in their core values of Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga, Whanaungatanga, Integrity, and Service. These values guide their conduct, decision-making, and commitment to the wellbeing of all communities they support.
The Otautahi Māori Wardens remember the many rōpū who came to support them following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, and they continue to uphold that same spirit of unity, resilience, and reciprocity.
All new members are carefully vetted, and training is delivered by experienced Wardens with a minimum of five years’ service. This ensures a high standard of professionalism, integrity, and care in all that they do.
